Grates are a type of terrain in Splatoon and Splatoon 2. Grates can not be splattered by Ink and Inklings and Octolings alike can go through them via squid or octo form.
Appearance
They can be any shape or color. But mainly, they are a solid yellow or gray (as some are steel) and have tiny or big gaps in them, causing them to be big enough for ink and Inklings /Octolings to fall through.

Tips
- In human form, you can walk on grates, but not in squid form.
- Since players in their humanoid forms are slower, and grates force them to stay in their humanoid forms, going on grates make players a bigger target. So, proceed with caution.
- A tip is to, if players can, go through the grates.
- Another tip for players is to maybe jump and dodge when attacked, as it’ll make it harder for the person to get splatted.
- If one should use Kraken, it will act just like squid form and will cause the player to go through.
