Armor

Armor are packs found throughout Hero Mode. They are often found in crates scattered throughout the mission.

Functionality

During Hero Mode, the player character may find armor packs to help them not get splatted. There are multiple stages of armor, the most basic being what looks like a bike helmet. The player can equip up to three layers of armor at once. If the player is ever splatted, one layer of armor will break off and allow the player to continue fighting.

In Splatoon 2, the player can only pick up two layers of armor at once. However, if they're ever splatted in their basic suit they will be significantly slower in both squid and kid form. Sometimes when they lose their armor, the jacket will be seen flying off to show their vulnerability. Also, their first set of armor will regain itself overtime, faster if they remain submerged in their own ink and avoid further combat. They can also pick up an armor pack instead of waiting for the armor to regenerate.

The armor granted from picking up the armor packs in levels differ between Hero Mode in Splatoon 2 and its Octo Expansion. Armor for Agent 4 is designed after bicycle gear, while armor for Agent 8 is designed after motorcycle gear. In both cases, when the player takes enough damage from enemy ink, the armor will be broken and fall off, leaving the player one layer of armor weaker and more vulnerable to being splattered if not careful in that moment of exposure.

However, clearing a stage in Hero Mode on Splatoon 2 with one or both extra layers of armor still intact awards a bonus of 10 Power Eggs for doing so, along with an additional bonus of another 10 Power Eggs if one clears the stage with a ready, but not used, special weapon such as the Tenta Missiles, the Splashdown, or the Sting Ray.

Armor pickups return in the Splatoon 3 Hero Mode, "Return of the Mammalians". Regardless of Agent 3's Hero Suit's condition, when collecting armor pickups, the armor will always look the same when having one or two extra layers equipped. The extra armor is colored in orange, blue, and black, and the second layer has a visor attached to the front of the helmet to protect the eyes.

In Splatoon 3's Side Order, Jelletons have a 0.5% chance to drop armor when splatted. When picked up while the player's base armor is not broken, a four-sectioned digital shield the same color as the player's ink appears, slowly rotating around them. Despite its appearance, the armor functions in an identical manner to standard armor, absorbing damage regardless of the shield's positioning. The chance of armor drops can be increased as the Lucky Chain fills and by selecting Armor Drop Color Chips. The latter can increase the chance to a maximum of a 3% base chance, requiring five chips to do so. The player can only benefit from one shield to begin with, but this number can be increased to up to a maximum of four shields with Marina's hacks. The Pearl Drone may also produce armor through the Drone Items Color Chip, a color chip only made available through Marina's hacks.
