splatoon

Splatoon 3 (スプラトゥーン 3 Supuratūn 3?) is a third-person shooter developed and published by Nintendo and launched on the 9th of September 2022. It is the sequel to 2017's Splatoon 2, and like its predecessor, was released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.

The game also has a demo that was released on August 25th, 2022. The demo was playable on August 27th, 2022, from 9:00 AM Pacific Time (12:00 PM Eastern) until 9:00 PM Pacific Time (12:00 AM, August 28th Eastern)

History

Splatoon 3 is developed and published by Nintendo. The game was first announced in a Nintendo Direct on February 17th, 2021, with a planned release in 2022.

Plot

Splatoon 3 takes place five years after the events of Splatoon 2, in a city named Splatsville (also known as the "city of chaos"), stationed within a region called the Splatlands. It is located far away from Inkopolis (the main setting of the first two games in the Splatoon series). With the development of Splatsville increased rapidly, one and a half years after the events of the Splatocalypse, more Inklings and Octolings started to move to the city.

Gameplay

Players will have access to new movement techniques to dodge and expand the possibilities of attacks. A "squid roll" allows them to leap and twirl out of their ink, and a "squid surge" allows them to quickly swim up ink-covered walls and jump out at the top.

A new type of Spawn Point is used during online battles: an espresso maker-like cube called a Spawner Drone. It floats above the stage, allowing players to aim at their desired deployment location. After choosing where to deploy, the spawn point launches players to that location in their swim form. Regular spawn points can still be seen on Scorch Gorge but concealed in a tarp and not confirmed to be usable.

Splatoon 3 also has Amiibo, like in Splatoon and Splatoon 2.

Announcement Trailer Details

The game seems to have taken a twist as the terrain is now a dry desert. The trailer kicks off with the presumed player looking at an Inkling with a hood, goggles and dust mask over their face.

You then choose your species, Inkling or Octoling. You are no longer gender locked, instead you have "styles". It seems that Octolings are now normalized as you have a choice between both of them with no additional cost. Your character then removes their dust mask as you choose their skin tone. After that, the Inkling/Octoling removes their goggles, and you get to pick their eye color. The choices you see seem to have quite a variety, as some of the options are multicolored or even tricolored. We don't get to see many of these, however, as the player in the trailer immediately goes to the simple yellow toned eyes with a bit of red around. They then remove their hood, and you can choose from several different hairstyles. Then the Inkling stands up and you can pick from several different legwear options. As you finish customizing your character, it then switches to the Smallfry next to them. The only customization option for the "little buddy", is simply the hairstyle.

After you have completed customizing to your heart's extent, the Inkling/Octoling gets up and heads to a train that leads to the new hub, Splatsville.

New Content

Splatoon 3 will introduce some new main weapons, such as a bow named the Tri-Stringer and a window wiper weapon named Splatana Wiper, which are variants of the new weapon classes: Stringers and Splatanas.

There are also new special weapons: the Zipcaster, the Big Bubbler, the Crab Tank, the Killer Wail 5.1, the Reefslider, the Tacticooler, the Trizooka and the Wave Breaker.

Replacing respawn machines, there is now an espresso machine-inspired floating cube that your player stands on called a Spawner Drone.

A Smallfry was shown in the trailer named "Little Buddy", functioning as a companion of some sort. However, as seen in the trailers, it will not accompany you in online battle modes.

Modes

Splat Zones

Splatoon 3 Splat Zones Icon Thumb

Two teams fight to keep control of specially marked zones on the map by covering them with their ink. When all Zones are under a team's control, the team's timer counts down toward zero. The timer will stop if the opposing team takes control of the Zones, and their timer will begin to count down. Both teams start at 100 on their counters. The team whose timer gets to zero wins the match. After 5 minutes, if neither team gets their timer to zero, the team who got their timer the lowest wins.

Tower Control

Splatoon 3 Tower Icon Thumb

Players compete for control of a central Tower platform, which will move through the stage towards enemy territory along a path when a player stands on it. If the Tower is overtaken by an opponent, it will reverse direction. There are some spots on the map where the tower will stand still. The player on the tower must stay on it until the countdown is over to pass the control. If the team doesn't complete the control, after some seconds the countdown will recover, and it will need to be completed again. Whichever team rides the tower to their respective goal spot at the end of the path wins.

Rainmaker

Splatoon 3 Rainmaker Icon Thumb

Players compete for control of the Rainmaker, a unique weapon used only in this mode. The goal is to take it into the enemy base and place it on a pedestal, ending with a knockout if either team does so. The Rainmaker is very heavy, preventing the user from performing a Super Jump, but can fire ink tornadoes similar to those of the Trizooka.

Clam Blitz

Splatoon 3 Clam Blitz Icon Thumb

The objective of Clam Blitz is to pick up clams, which are scattered around the stage, and deposit them into the shielded goal near the opposing team's base. Players picking up clams may choose to build the Power Clam needed to break open the opponent's goal or toss the clams to teammates so that they can build the Power Clam; completed Power Clams can also be tossed between teammates, as carrying them introduces a risk to the carrier by showing the location of the carrier to all opponents.
