Rainmaker (Japanese: ガチホコ Gachi-Hoko / Real Earnest Shachihoko) is a Ranked Battle mode in Splatoon, Splatoon 2, and Splatoon 3 that was announced in the Splatoon Direct on May 7, 2015. In this mode, two teams fight to obtain a weapon called the "Rainmaker". The goal is to carry the Rainmaker into the opposing team's base. A scoring system called "goal distance" determines the winner when neither team gets the Rainmaker to the goal. A modified version of the Rainmaker is used in Splatoon 2 as a ‘Sheldon Request’ against DJ Octavio.

Rules

Rainmaker is a "Capture the Flag" style mode, two teams fight to obtain a weapon called the "Rainmaker" which is encased in a shield and must be popped out, be cautious as those on the opposing team of the team that popped the shield can be splatted by the shield bursting (Similar to retrieving a Zapfish in Hero Mode.)

The goal is to carry the Rainmaker into the opposing team's base. A scoring system called "goal distance" can also determine the winner. If neither team manages to carry the Rainmaker into the opposing team's base, whichever team's goal distance is the lowest will be declared the winner. Your goal distance will decrease as you get closer to the other team's base. One person from a team carries the Rainmaker and their teammates must protect them as they advance to the enemy base. When carrying the Rainmaker, the wielder has 60 seconds to reach their goal or it will "inksplode" instantly splatting the wielder; retreating or going back to spawn with the Rainmaker will speed up the countdown. If that person inksplodes or gets splatted, the Rainmaker will be dropped and re-bubbled, possibly allowing the other team to retrieve it. When an inkling retrieves the Rainmaker, it'll tell them to "Make it Rain!" The Rainmaker is supposedly heavy, so you cannot super jump and your speed will decrease.

If the losing team is in control of the Rainmaker as the five-minute game clock runs out, the game goes into overtime. If the team in the lead can splat whoever is holding the Rainmaker, they will win; however, if the losing team can get the rainmaker closer to the goal or at the goal than the opposition, they will win.

The Rainmaker as a weapon works similarly to the Inkzooka, allowing the person carrying it to splat enemies and clear a path. However unlike the Inkzooka the Rainmaker must be charged and creates a tornado like ink storm that travels slower, but can pass through walls.

if the rainmaker is dropped at a location where others cant reach it will return to the original spawnpoint. 

Splatoon 2

The rules of the mode are the same in Splatoon 2, but a few things are different. In Splatoon 2, the rainmaker will spawn in the middle of the map. The Rainmaker shield will pop after taking 1,000 damage from one team. The weapon can now be charged up, and if fully charged and then used, it will create a large explosion as well as a large trail of ink. Any enemies caught in this trail will be splatted. In Splatoon 2, the rainmaker attack does not go through walls. Overtime will start if the team that is not in the lead is holding the rainmaker and will end if the rainmaker holder dies or lowers the remaining number to a lower amount than the team in the lead.

Splatoon 3

In Splatoon 3, checkpoints were added, similar to Tower Control, that must be cleared before advancing to a team's base. This is presumably to help prevent matches from ending too quickly. Most maps have two different checkpoints to allow for a choice of route, though only one needs to be cleared. Upon clearing a checkpoint, the player holding the Rainmaker will drop it without dying and the Rainmaker returns to its bubble.
